Why the Majority of Teens Are Obese and What Parents Can do About It Thu, 24 Dec 2009 14:27:54 +0000 Sports Official The percentage of people who have weight problems is continually increasing. Research showed that 70% of people worldwide are overweight. By overweight we mean that they weight more than the ideal weight (based on their gender and height). Unfortunately this situation does not exclude teenagers. Obesity is a common problem among teens as well.

Obesity creates a lot of problems to teenagers. The last years there was an increase in diabetes and in other related diseases due to teenagers being overweight. For overweight adults the correct approach to lose weight is to watch their diet and exercise. This is also true for overweight teens but the problem is that teens are more difficult to focus on their weight loss efforts. Weight loss for teens can only be done with the intervention of the parents. Parents can help their children lose weight.

Since the responsibility for teens to lose weight relies on the parents, they should make sure that they provide their children with meals that are healthy and can assist them to lose the unnecessary weight. They should not try to prohibit their children from eating certain type of foods because this will create the opposite effects. Instead they should try and teach their children the principles of a healthy diet and convince them that it is for their benefit to lose weight.

They should be careful though not to be very pressing and become obsessed about weight loss. The path to follow should not be too strict but advisory. Parents should not be obsessed and start counting calories, fats etc. If they do this they will eventually pass this obsession to their children and this will not do any good. Parents cannot follow their children all the time and watch what they eat or not. This is impossible so the only way to approach this is by educating them on health matters. The sooner parents start educating their children about healthy diets the better. It is believed that the reason teens are obese is because of their eating habits during childhood.

Another measure that the parents can use to help their children lose weight is to encourage them to exercise. Exercise is among the best healthier habits that a person can adopt. There are only benefits from exercise. Exercise does not mean that you children should join a gym. There are a lot of activities that can help teens lose weight. Encourage them to join a sport and be active. Turn off the TV and game consoles and help them appreciate the joy of physical exercise.

Besides the above methods that can help your children fight obesity you should not forget that the parents set the examples for their children. For instance if you eat unhealthy - junk food and once you go home you sit on the couch watching TV, then this is no good example for your children. To convince your children that they should change their lifestyle habits you have to do it first. Start a new life style with exercise and a healthy diet and this will not only help your children but it will do good for your health as well.

]]> 3 Take A Kenyan Safari To Mount Kenya National Park And Reserve Thu, 24 Dec 2009 12:18:17 +0000 Sports Official A Kenyan Safari to the Mount Kenya National Park and Reserve should be on your list of options when planning a safari if only because of its height, being the second highest mountain in Africa. Mount Kenya is 17,058 feet high and the National Park and Reserve has 1300 square kilometres of forest reserve with 715 square kilometres above the 10,500 ft tree line, where the entire mountain is National Park

This height means that what you are going to see a huge variety of spectacular scenery which makes the Park very special. There are lakes, tarns, glaciers, peaks, natural mineral springs, and the vegetation changes quite dramatically with the height from sea level. Add to this high altitude adapted plains game, and unique alpine vegetation with eleven species of endemic plants. The surroundings in the Mount Kenya Safari Park are truly breathtaking

You will find dry upland forest in the lower slopes, then after about 7000 ft this changes to montane forest of cedar and podo which then changes to thick bamboo at a little over 8000 ft, and then these die out as you climb higher, and you find smaller trees and high altitude mosses. After 10000ft you come onto high altitude heath and shrubs , and then finally above 11000 feet there is open moorland.

A Kenya safari is mostly about wildlife, and Mount Kenya national park has its fair share, again changing with altitude, and the season of the year. During the rains it is the dispersal area for Meru National Park especially elephant and buffalo. In fact electrified fencing has been put up near populated areas to keep the elephants off farmland.

The wildlife in the forest below the Park Boundary includes the aforementioned elephant and buffalo. To which can be added lion, several different species of antelope including the very rare bongo. If you are incredibly lucky you might see up to eleven species unique to this area above 2500 metres. There are the black leopard, black and white Colobus and Sykes monkeys, bushbuck, buffalo, elephant. Then lower down Olive baboon, waterbuck, black rhino, black fronted duikers, leopard, giant forest hog, genet cat, bushpig and hyena.. The very privileged few might even see albino zebra.
Above the treeline you'll find high altitude zebra and eland.

The accommodation in the Mount Kenya National Park consists of one lodge, seven climber huts, and three self help banda sites , and three lodges and a self help banda site just outside the park.

To summarise the attractions of the Mount Kenya National Park and reserve.

There is excellent game viewing, fantastic scenery, with the lakes, tarns, glaciers, and high peaks. A number of rare birds and animals, and the high altitude plains game and the mountain forest. Added to this the natural mineral springs, and for a few intrepid souls mountain climbing itself, but this is not for the hill walker but more the skilled mountaineer.

Teen Anxiety Attacks: Signs, Symptoms and Remedies Thu, 24 Dec 2009 09:03:36 +0000 Sports Official All teens, just like any adult, feel anxious from time to time as a normal reaction to stressors. Going on a date, speaking in public, meeting new people, competing in sports, performing on stage, and taking exams are some of the things that make us feel apprehensive.

However, some teens experience severe anxiety than others. Some even feel severe anxiety by just thinking about the situation that has yet to happen. And when someone experiences episodes of panics or develops irrational fear over certain events or problems, it is known as anxiety attack.

What are the signs and symptoms of anxiety attacks?

Different people react to situations differently. Hence, there are really no uniform symptoms of anxiety attack that are present to all.

Nonetheless, teens may show some or all of the following signs: shortness of breath, chest pain, heart burn, smothering sensation, sweating, shivering, chilling or shaking, numbness in the head and face, neck and shoulder pain, palpitation, derealisation or depersonalization, hyperactivity, dry mouth, fear of going crazy, headaches, stomach pain, and other body pains.

Take note that some of the mentioned signs and symptoms can be caused by other medical, psychological, and physical conditionals. They can also be the effects of current medical treatment, side effects of certain medications or the body's natural reaction to stimuli.

When is too much anxiety too much?

Excess anxiety is when you feel worry, anxious and afraid for no apparent reason at all. Under normal circumstances, teens worry because of specific things (like what was mentioned above). But there is an obvious difference between healthy anxiety and irrational anxiousness.

Teens during an anxiety attack tend to react disproportionately over simple things or events that seem not to cause any excessive anxious reaction to others. In other words, too much anxiety is an unusual reaction over simple or trivial things.

What are the available remedies for anxiety attacks?

Severe cases of anxiety attacks may require prescription drugs to control or reduce its symptoms. Prescription drugs may be antidepressants and benzodiazepines. Antidepressants may take some weeks to take effect so it is important to continuously take medications and not just during an attack.

Benzodiazepines, on the other hand, have quick relief effects, usually within 30 minutes, but they are highly addictive, thus it should be used with caution. Remember that medication should not be the first treatment option as there are other effective ways to combat the effects of anxiety.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is one of the most effective ways to treat anxiety attacks or any anxiety disorder for that matter. CBT focuses on the thinking pattern of the patients and replaces negative thoughts with positive ones.

Exposure therapy exposes the person to the physical sensations of panic in a safe and controlled environment. Through repeated exposure, patients gain greater self control and more confidence in facing fearful situation.

Natural Remedies

Proper diet, regular exercise and sufficient sleep bring balance to the body, which help reduce the episodes of anxiety attacks.

Massage, aromatherapy, relaxation and breathing techniques promote wellness, relax muscles and ease muscle tension.

Herbal treatments naturally relieve stress and restlessness associated with anxiety, thus solving anxiety problem.

Thinking positively and talking to a supportive person can help reduce the occurrence of anxiety attacks.

But what is the most critical factor in preventing teen anxiety attacks?

The key is to get rid of the 'fear' of having another anxiety attack. This fear builds upon already heightened anxiety levels to such an extent that anxiety attacks can be triggered. This can be seen as an ever increasing 'cycle of anxiety'.

To discover the simple 'ONE MOVE' technique that will eliminate your fear factor and so break your vicious cycle of anxiety at last, go here now and prepare to get your old self back again.

Pura Vida! Visiting Costa Rica's National Parks Thu, 24 Dec 2009 06:15:58 +0000 Sports Official When a survey last year asked the British public for their ideas for a national motto, the responses were typically British in their irony and wit. Suggestions such as ‘Unity in individuality’, ‘Smile! You’re on CCTV’ and ‘Mustn’t Grumble’ were just some of the phrases that the public supplied as their expressions of twenty-first century Britain.

If national mottos are anything to go by as a reflection of the country itself, Costa Rica’s ‘Pura Vida’ promises a lot indeed. Literally translated, ‘Pura Vida’ means ‘Pure Life’, and certainly seems to express very concisely exactly why Costa Rica has shot to fame in the tourism and Ecotourism industries in the past few years.

Home to twenty-six National Parks (and yet covering only a miniscule 0.1% of the world’s total landmass), Costa Rica has managed to protect almost a quarter of its national territory under government legislation - more than any other country in the world - making it a popular destination for the increasing numbers of Ecotourists looking to become more ‘one with nature’.

The National Parks themselves are not merely numerous, but also cater for lots of different type of holidaymaker, offering a wide-range of different natural attractions. Whether you wish to see a variety of different creatures in their natural habitats, like the turtle beaches, frog swamps and jaguar rainforests of Tortuguero National Park, or whether you wish to snorkel around beautiful coral and crumbling shipwrecks at Cahuita; Costa Rica has it all. From the mountains of Irazu, upon which you can view both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean at once (it really is possible!), to the Volcano at Arenal – one of the few places in the world where you’ll cross your fingers and actually hope for a volcanic eruption – the National Parks of Costa Rica offer something for everyone.

As if the vast array of natural sights weren’t enough, Costa Rica also offers a teeming metropolis in the form of its capital San Jose, a city rife with culture and history. Directly in the middle of Costa Rica, and therefore in easy distance of many of the great National Parks, San Jose is the centre of (human!) activity in the country. The city offers some more conventional tourist attractions, such as the Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica, or National Theatre of Costa Rica, which has musical and dramatic performances throughout the week, as well as several museums, such as the Gold Museum, which showcases a number of gold artifacts from ancient civilisations. For those who are daunted by the prospect of camping with jaguars at the foot of active volcanoes, there are also many hotels in San Jose offering a safe haven from feline predators!

San Jose, then, offers not only the chance to study the history of this country from man’s perspective, but also serves as a great base for those who wish to ‘go wild’ and witness first-hand the natural history of the best-preserved country on the planet.

The Struggling Teen – How Parents Can Help Thu, 24 Dec 2009 04:03:02 +0000 Sports Official The teens are usually pretty awful years as the struggling teen battles with hormonal changes which do nothing to help his or her concern about body image, success at school and in the sports field. In addition a whole host of other problems seem to all come at the same time. What can parents do to keep a watchful eye and to help?

What does the struggling teen need most at this time? Most teenagers surveyed say that the fact that their parents are there to help them make responsible choices is the most important thing for them. It is up to parents to know who they are hanging out with and to be on the alert if they start keeping shady company. It is all part of being a parent but sometimes there are difficult choices to make in helping a struggling teen and this is where behavior modification comes into the picture.

Let's look at one example . How do you deal with a teen who is drinking and has got caught up in the culture that drinking is OK and is part of being an adult. The parent has two choices and the first is to ignore the problem and even though aware of it, never speaks to the teenager about it. Silence is golden but in this case it is taken by the teenager as permission to get drunk, stoned or whatever. The second choice is to make your views very clear on what you think of underage drinking and the problems it can cause. It is all part of letting them know what the bottom line is. If you leave it and think it is a phase, then the problem can only get worse and you will be faced with unpleasant consequences later on.

Teenagers need guidelines, rules and they know what the bottom line is and they are signed up to it. If you follow a behaviour modification or behavior therapy program, you can easily learn how to approach these problems and what exactly to say and how to deal with it without going crazy yourself. There is a very interesting report in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs which says that when teenagers are pulled up by their parents about underage drinking that they are much less likely to become heavy or problem drinkers in adult life.

Here is another example. You are a little concerned about your teen's use of the Internet and you do not know how you are going to impose the ground rules without taking the computer away which is a totally unnecessary and drastic step. How can you help? There is no need for spying and you can be quite upfront about telling the teenager that you are purchasing software which will block certain sites and also records instant messenger chats and keeps an eye on things your teen is posting on My Space and Facebook. It is easy to explain the reasons and again you can do that calmly and explain the legal implications of watching pornography and so on. A good behaviour modification program will show you how to approach that and how to set it up but above all it will really guide you to help your struggling teen to grow up as a well balanced adult.
